FTP Server Setup On External Hard Drive

  • 10

I’m running a windows lan that connects 3 computers and a shared storage external hard drive. The whole network, including the external hard drive is connected by ethernet back to my adsl modem/router. I want to convert the external hard drive into an ftp server to enable secure file sharing on the internet by allowing remote access (for the purpose of downloading files) to anyone that I offer a username and password to.

The external hard drive is a Western Digital World Edition (blue light). I believe it’s a 2008 model.

The adsl modem/router is a Billion Bipac 7300(G) RA.

Is this doable?? and if so can someone help me with instructions please?

Thanks in advance

  1. It should be doable but whether it is or not will depend on what ftp software you’re using.

If you can find software able to map to a network drive (ie: your external hard drive) then you would configure it to point there and then the port forward on your router would point to the PC running the ftp server software. Clients would connect and have access to whatever folders you make available on the external hard drive.

I am the captain of my soul.
