Examples Of Software Routers ??

  • 0

Hi every one,

This is my first post, i am pretty new in this site.

A few days ago i came across the term “Software Routers”, i went through many websites to find an accurate definition but got a bit lost. What i just understood was a Software Router is a software to be installed on a computer to function like a real Hardware Router. If my understanding was accurate, then my questions would be:
Should those Software Routers be installed in specific operating systems? Servers for example? or any OS would work smoothly?

What are the most popular Software Routers, i want to read a little about each.

Thank you all,
Alis

  1. All routers are software routers. A router is just a specialised computer. But the price of consumer routers is so low that it doesn’t make much sense to use anything other than a dedicated device for the job.

  2. Software routing is weak in the Microsoft world but strong in the Linux world.

Web search ip tables and squid for ideas of what linux can do concerning routing.

  3. Many people use Linux, Unix & even Windows boxes as routers but it’s not worth the time or effort, unless you just want to play.
