Do Bit Error Rate (BER) Cause Slow Internet Connection?

  • 0

My Internet connection has been running slow for a few weeks 10 Mbps when I should be getting 50 Mbps. I have look at the diagnostics page for my modem and my power level and SNR are all in range but on two of the channels I am seeing a bit error rate of .074% and .549% Is this what is slowing my connection and if so how can I get it fixed?

  1. Just keep an eye on it for a couple of weeks. Sometimes you get a slightly higher error rate when something has been changed. It then lowers the speed slightly to put things right. It might sound like a contradiction but when the error rate reduces the throughput can end up higher because it no longer has to re-send parts. Throughput is really the most important factor.

  2. My ISP seems to have fixed the issue as my speeds are back where they should be. But the bit error rate has gone up to 1.2% on one channel and 2.3% on another channel. Is this something that is going to cause issues or is it nothing to worry about?
