Before ordering anything online, I wanted to see what it was like to use my iPad2 with an Bluetooth keyboard. I bought a Zagg Messenger Universal keyboard at Target as a test. It paired fine and worked fine. I didn’t like it mainly because it was a separate keyboard and I was really looking for a keyboard/hard case for my iPad.
I looked on-line and found a ZaggFolio unit at TechRabbit and ordered a “Certified Pre-Owned” keyboard:
http://www.techrabbit.com/zagg-zagg…
When I powered it on and pressed the Connect button, my iPad found it. I followed the instructions for pairing: I selected the Zagg keyboard on my iPad’s bluetooth list and a pop-up told me to enter a 4 digit code on the Zagg keyboard and hit Enter. About 30 seconds later, I got a “Pairing Unsuccessful” pop-up.
Pairing Unsuccessful – Make sure the “ZAGG Keyboard” is turned on, in range and is ready to pair.
Well, of course it’s on, in range and ready to pair, otherwise the iPad wouldn’t be seeing it. 😉
BTW, if I simply wait 30 seconds after tapping the Zagg Keyboard in the list – without entering the code – I get the same message. It’s like the iPad knows it’s there via the “connect” button but isn’t really listening to the keyboard. I then tried the keyboard on another iPad2 and it did the same thing.
Thinking it might be defective, I returned it to TechRabbit and upgraded to a “Factory Refurbished” unit. Unfortunately, it does the same thing. I get the same Pairing Unsuccessful message on both iPads.
I should note that both iPads are running IOS 7.1.2, so they are kind of old, but the keyboard doesn’t say anything about IOS version restrictions. In addition, as mentioned earlier, the Zagg Messenger Universal keyboard worked fine.
Can anyone tell me why this model keyboard won’t talk to either of my iPad2’s? Could it be an IOS issue? Is there any thing I can do to test it?
Thanks!

btk1w1: As I mentioned in my OP “When I powered it on and pressed the Connect button, my iPad found it.” (“it” be the Zagg keyboard)
The Connect light flashes and the Zagg keyboard appears in the list on my iPad. The keyboard only shows up on the iPad list after the Connect button on the keyboard is pressed, so I know that the iPad is seeing the keyboard.
As far as turning Bluetooth off until the keyboard is in Connect mode, the instructions say to do the opposite:
1 – Turn the keyboard on
2 – Turn on Bluetooth in the iPad
3 – Press the Connect button on the keyboard. The status light will flash and the iPad displays Zagg Keyboard as an available device.
That part work absolutely fine. As soon as the Connect button on the Zagg is pressed, the iPad displays Zagg Keyboard as an available device. However, in the spirit of cooperation, I tried it your way. Connect button first, then iPad Bluetooth on. It didn’t change the symptoms.
I think the key point here is that the iPad sees the keyboard when the keyboard is in Connect mode, so we know they that are communicating.
A question: When the pop-up with pairing code appears on the iPad, who sets that code? In other words, is it the iPad that determines the code and then expects to see it from the keyboard or does the keyboard tell the iPad what code to expect?
I’m trying to determine just how much communication is going on between the 2 devices. Maybe it’s nothing more than the iPad saying “I see it” and that’s all.
