Microsoft (MSFT) Secures 700MW Texas Data Center Previously Targeted by Oracle and OpenAI

    Key Takeaways

    • Microsoft has secured a lease for a 700-megawatt data center facility in Abilene, Texas, that was initially built for Oracle and OpenAI
    • The facility is located immediately adjacent to the Stargate campus operated by Oracle and OpenAI
    • The agreement was finalized with developer Crusoe following Oracle and OpenAI’s decision to withdraw from the space
    • According to a source speaking with Reuters, OpenAI maintains all current agreements with Oracle without modification
    • Oracle previously disputed reports suggesting capacity delays at the Abilene location, characterizing those claims as false

Microsoft has taken control of a substantial Texas data center facility that Oracle and OpenAI chose to abandon, based on reporting from Bloomberg News released Tuesday.

Microsoft has agreed to rent a data center project in Texas that was originally being developed for Oracle and OpenAI, sources say https://t.co/tNkuA1mUir

    — Bloomberg (@business) March 24, 2026

The facility is located in Abilene, Texas, offering approximately 700 megawatts of power capacity. The location sits immediately beside the Stargate campus — the primary AI infrastructure hub developed by Oracle and OpenAI.

Microsoft finalized the lease arrangement with Crusoe, the company responsible for developing the Abilene facility. Both Oracle and OpenAI had previously terminated discussions about occupying the location before Microsoft entered negotiations.

A Microsoft spokesperson informed Reuters the company had no information to provide. Oracle and Crusoe both declined to offer comments when contacted.

Bloomberg published a report earlier this month indicating Oracle and OpenAI had abandoned expansion plans at the Abilene location. The negotiations reportedly stalled because of financing complications and evolving requirements from OpenAI.

Oracle refuted that narrative, stating that assertions regarding delayed capacity at Abilene were factually incorrect.

    OpenAI Maintains Current Oracle Partnership

A source with knowledge of the circumstances informed Reuters that OpenAI’s current contracts with Oracle continue without alteration — indicating this transaction does not disrupt their established collaboration.

This represents a meaningful nuance. Microsoft’s acquisition of the Abilene facility does not appear to indicate deteriorating relations between Oracle and OpenAI, based on available information.

MSFT stock closed down 2.69% for the trading session. Oracle (ORCL) dropped 4.42%.

Intensifying Competition for Data Center Resources

Major technology firms have been rapidly expanding data center capabilities to accommodate AI applications. Microsoft’s Copilot platform and OpenAI’s ChatGPT service both require massive computational infrastructure.

A 700-megawatt operation represents a significant acquisition. For context, this level of capacity can support tens of thousands of AI processing chips operating simultaneously.

Microsoft has maintained an aggressive investment strategy in AI infrastructure, allocating billions toward OpenAI partnerships and proprietary facilities.

Acquiring a location initially planned for rival operations represents an unconventional move, though understandable given the severe constraints on available data center capacity.

Crusoe, the developer, focuses on environmentally conscious computing infrastructure. The firm did not provide a response to Reuters’ inquiry.

The Abilene transaction has yet to receive official confirmation from involved parties. All available information originates from Bloomberg’s coverage, based on confidential sources.

Oracle’s Stargate campus continues to operate next to the location Microsoft will soon control — establishing Abilene as a significant concentration of AI infrastructure in West Texas.

As of Tuesday afternoon, Microsoft, Oracle, and OpenAI had all declined to release official communications regarding the transaction.
