Nvidia GeForce 420M Video Card Overheating

  • 4

It’s been some time now that my graphics card (whenever i play a game) overheats i’ve checked the temperature and it goes over 70 even in the menus of SC2 (works as a benchmark) i know this graphics card its not for gaming but it didnt happen before, once when i was using it alot of dust fell on the keyboar and the screen and im guessing that dust is most likely the problem as i see no artifacts and other weird stuff happening while gaming, i dont use this for gaming but it bothers me alot and i want to know if something like this has happened to any of you.

Here are the specs

Intel core i5-480M
Nvidia GeForce 420M
6 Gb of ram DDR
640 HDD

Temperatures lately
40°C idle (videocard) and 70°C+ when gaming
50°C CPU

Also the frames of the games drop ALOT lately too 🙂 and im thinking of taking the pc apart and checking if some of that dust somehow made it to the GPU and its keeping the heat in there.

  1. Make sure your vents are unclogged and have enough air space. sometimes its worth buying a notebook rest with extra fans. Temperature for CPU when playing at max you should be about 65-70 celcius not more.

  2. According to NVIDIA support:

“NVIDIA GPUs are designed to operate reliably up to their maximum specified operating temperature. This maximum temperature varies by GPU. Refer to the nvidia.com product page for individual GPU specifications. If a GPU hits the maximum temperature, the driver will throttle down performance to attempt to bring the temperature back underneath the maximum specification. If the GPU temperature continues to increase despite the performance throttling, the GPU will shutdown the system to prevent damage to the graphics card. Performance utilities such as EVGA Precision or GPU-Z can be used to monitor the temperature of NVIDIA GPUs. If a GPU is hitting the maximum temperature, improved system cooling via an added system fan in the PC can help to reduce temperatures.”

  3. It’s a laptop therefore it doesn’t have a video card, it has an integrated graphics chip. 70C is nowhere near overheating for the GPU, 50C is nowhere near overheating for the CPU.

Notice the TJUNCTION temp for your CPU is 105C:

The max temp for the desktop version of the GT420 is also 105C:

If you’re concerned, just blow the cooling vents out with compressed air & be done with it.
