Latitude e6440
Windows 10
8GB DDR3
Uses: Light gaming and Mobility

So this laptop was given to me a few years ago as broken but all it needed was working RAM and I had that laying around. It hadn’t been used for the past 5 months when I pulled it out to upgrade the firmware on my router. It boot up, fully loaded and then I opened a web page. The whole thing freezes but doesn’t shut off so I hold the power button to power it down.

Now, when you push the power button; there is light on the power button, The fan spins up, the HDD spins up and then quickly there is a click and everything stops. After that, the WiFi Light is on, The battery light is on and the HDD light is blinking. During all of this, nothing is on the screen at all. No beeping either.

What I have tried:
Removing battery
Only using power adapter without battery
Holding power button for 1min with adapter and battery removed
Removing RAM one at a time
Reseating RAM
Removing HDD
Making sure only the essentials are attached when booting

The last two things I can think of is, the MoBo or the CPU. I can’t test the CPU because I don’t have another laptop to put it in. I haven’t pulled the MoBo out completely but so far I don’t see any damage. Is there anything else to try that I missed?

My other questions; Should I fully pull the MoBo and inspect with a fine tooth comb or does this resemble a definite CPU failure? If the CPU went out, should I suspect something is up with the MoBo also and not chance putting a new CPU in here? The CPU itself runs new @$140 and used @$60. Should I put $140 into this or go used since this Laptop is older?

  1. There are MANY things that can come into play here. If the power brick is not putting out the right voltage then both the battery will not charge and the laptop would not run. If the power circuit on the laptop is bad then neither will work either. If the CPU was ever removed from the laptop and the old thermal compound was not cleaned off or there was not new applied (or incorrectly) then it would thermal limit before boot up was complete. That is just the tip of the iceburg and you are going to have a really hard time figuring out.
If you have or can borrow a power supply from a similar laptop that is compatible you can try that both with and without the battery. The rest is just hard work and a lot of luck.

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.
