Fix Laptop Broken Usb Port Or Just Buy New Laptop Dilemma

  • 2

I got my Acer Aspire 5532 series laptop a couple of years ago and about a year after I got it one of the two usb ports broke, with a black piece coming out of it so that there is just the mettalic box left. Well I just made do with one usb port until about a week ago the same thing happened to the remaining one- only this time theres a wierd wirey part stuck in there. Is it worth the money to get it fixed or should I just get a new laptop?

  1. USB ports don’t just break, especially 3 of them on the same laptop. If they were defective, you should have contacted Acer a LONG time ago about it. I just did a quick Google search & it appears others have had the same problem. If you can’t do the repair yourself, I can only guess the charge from a shop would be close to the cost of a replacement laptop. It certainly wouldn’t hurt to contact Acer & complain.

  2. Depends on how much the repair is going to cost. It seems an expensive fix to buy a new laptop just for two USB ports so I would look into repair cost first.
I would give Acer a miss next time you buy a laptop, and HP too. Bits are regularly failing or breaking on them. Go for something with better build-quality like a Toshiba or a Sony, or even Packard Bell ones are better than most other consumer-level laptops.

  3. another LOW COST option is a PCMIA usb card if you have that slot on the laptop:

Those PCMIA slots come in real handy for that type of stuff.

How the heck could you break your usb ports? Were you hanging your laptop using the usb cable? You should probably be more careful plugging it in and NOT force the plugs if they are upside down….be gentle…..
