Solved Are All Internal Laptop Optical Drives The Same Size?

  • 7

I would like to replace the DVD optical drive in my HP Compaq dc7900 Ultra-slim Desktop PC with a Blu Ray drive. Not yet decided whether that will be a full burner or just a BD ROM with DVD burner. My question is whether all internal laptop optical drives are the same size?

Would either work or do I need a specific model?

Many thanks

  1. They often vary in thickness; more recent drives being slimmer/thiner than earlier drives.

Actual shape may also vary depending on make and model of the drive; as may the fixing points (the places where screws may be required to hold the unit in place). Some drives may be all in one; enclosed in a mounting case/frame, so not quite so, and you use the frame from the original drive (if it will fit/accommodate).Some may require you provide the bezel (the front plate) from the original drive, so not…

Many a given model drive may fit more than one brand of laptop; but always wise to check…

As Derek suggests, first check with hp, then maybe hunt on Amazon, possibly Egghead (if in USA/Canada); even eBay; as prices can/do vary. And if possible secure an option to return a replacement unit if it won’t fit?
