I’m switching cable service, and one of the questions online is do I need a modem for internet. I have an Acer Aspire 5515 laptop, does it have a built-in modem for cable? It seems I read something to this effect somewhere, but not sure. If not I need to take the option to “lease” a modem from the cable company… which I’d rather not do if I don’t need to, of course. Anyone know?

If you plan on getting the VOIP (voice over internet protocol) you definitely need one of their modems. Buying a modem is not really a good idea. First of all when things don’t work the first thing the tech says is that the problem is with YOUR hardware.
Also, technology changes and you will get stuck owning obsolete hardware. You will also need to rent set top boxes.
Do you currently have cable internet service?
You need a cable modem. If you don’t currently own one then you will need to lease or buy. If you wish to use wireless connections for your laptop you will also need a wireless router.
I recommend using a router even if you only plan on using one wired connection. The router acts as a hardware firewall that protects your computer somewhat from the outside world.
Most wireless router will also have ports for connecting computers to it using a networking cable.
