how much ram is too much ram?

If you’re going to run a 32-bit OS, anything over 3GB is too much. If you’re going to run a 64-bit OS, you can add as much as the motherboard can handle (the amount varies from board to board). Whether you actually need a ton of RAM depends on what the system is used for.
