HID-compliant mouse missing in Device Manager
My wife has somehow messed up her laptop again. It is a Win 7 machine. The wired mouse no longer works but the touchpad still does. I have tried moving the mouse to another USB port, trying another mouse that works, restoring to a previous restore point when it still worked, unplugging everything and pulling the battery, etc. All things I have found mentioned online so far.
One thing I see is that in Device Manager under “Mice and other pointing devices” there is no entry for HID-Compliant Mouse like on my laptop and also no “Human Interface Devices” in the list. Is this the problem and how do I get those added back?
Make sure pressing the power button on the laptop is set to shut off the machine for the next step.
Go into Device Manager, and see if you have any errors/warnings listed. If not, expand Universal Serial Buss controllers, and delete everything listed there. Be warned that at some point in this procedure, you’ll probably lose your mouse and keyboard. If / when that happens, tap the power button to cleanly shutdown the laptop. Reboot, and Windows should reinstall everything.
