BMW formally introduced the all-electric i3 sedan Wednesday, representing the second vehicle to emerge from its advanced Neue Klasse platform architecture.

The announcement positions BMW squarely against Tesla’s Model 3 range, with the German automaker making its intentions abundantly clear.
The i3 debuts exclusively as the 50 xDrive variant — featuring a dual-motor all-wheel-drive configuration delivering 469 horsepower. While Tesla’s Model 3 Performance generates 510 horsepower, BMW compensates with compelling advantages elsewhere.
BMW projects 900 km of range according to European WLTP testing standards, which converts to approximately 440 miles under EPA measurement protocols. This figure substantially exceeds the Tesla Model 3 Performance’s 309 EPA-rated miles, while also surpassing the Model 3 Premium’s 363-mile capacity.
The i3 gains roughly 250 miles of range during a mere 10-minute charging session, enabled by 800-volt electrical architecture and sixth-generation eDrive technology. Acceleration from 0-60 mph is projected at approximately four seconds.
Cabin Design and Digital Features
BMW has reimagined the interior layout around a 40-inch panoramic display stretching across the dashboard. The enhanced iDrive system operates on BMW’s latest Heart of Joy computing platform, delivering performance 10 times faster than its predecessor.
The new i3 features expanded physical dimensions compared to the current 3 Series — offering increased length, width, and height — while its exterior styling provides a preview of the forthcoming gas-powered 3 Series design language.
Official US pricing remains unconfirmed, though BMW anticipates positioning the i3 around $55,000. This places it above the Model 3 Premium AWD’s approximately $47,490 starting point, while matching the Model 3 Performance at $54,990.
Manufacturing Schedule and US Availability
Manufacturing is scheduled to commence at BMW’s Munich production facility in August 2026. European customers can expect deliveries beginning fall 2026, though American buyers face a longer wait — US deliveries are projected for 2027.
BMW has announced plans for additional variants, including an all-electric M3 performance model. The i3 sedan and iX3 SUV represent initial entries in an expanded Neue Klasse lineup encompassing four additional forthcoming models.
BMW characterizes the Neue Klasse programme as the largest financial commitment in company history.
