Can I Upgrade The CPU In A Gateway SX2855? To Which CPU?

  • 9

I realize the original 220 watt power supply is weak but I believe i can replace that with a 400 watt power supply from Tiger Direct.

The new power supply would be an iStarUSA IS-1U40PD8 1U Switching Power Supply – 400W, 80 Plus, 40mm Fan, 24-PinItem#: I202-2382 | Model#: IS-1U40PD8

After replacing the power supply I would like to upgrade the CPU to the fastest one possible.

I would then upgrade the graphics to a VisionTek 900463 Radeon HD 6570 Video Card – 1024MB, DDR3, PCI-Express (x16), 1x DMS59, 1x Mini DisplayPort, DirectX 11, Single-Slot, Low ProfileItem#: V261-6574 | Model#: 900463 also from Tiger Direct.

Can I do this and if so what is the fastest CPU I can use?

  1. That 400W PSU alone is $150 & the video card is another $130. And you haven’t even decided on a CPU yet. For easy math, let’s say it’s $70, that puts the total at $350. Why would you invest that much money in a crappy slim-style system?

From the link posted by kuwese in the following thread: “The motherboard is designed to support the LGA1155 socket for 2nd Generation Intel Core Family/Pentium/Celeron processors only.

The board is limited to 65W CPU’s only and ivy bridge chip won’t work

IMO, upgrading this system would be a huge waste of money. You would be better off selling it (or keep it as a 2nd system) then buy or build something decent out of standard components. Another option would be to buy a standard size case & power supply, then swap all the Gateway components into the new case.
