How Can I Get 1440×900 Sccreen Resolution Please?

I am sending you all this so that you will know you are not alone in your frustration with setting up 1440×900 screen resolution and to welcome any ideas which you may have to help solve the riddle.

I have two dinosaur PC’s, AMD Duron 950MHz/896Mb RAM and AMD Sempron 3000+ 1.8 GHz/2.0Gb RAM. To retain my data and keep the environment, I am used to, I have cloned my XP Pro system onto the newer m/c.

I even bought a second hand monitor, similar to the one I have been using for the past two years or so.

I was given my HP w19 monitor, which just worked, no bother, I had to select 1440×900 in Display Properties, of course. You would think that a cloned system would also provide 1440×900 but did it heckerslike!

The newer m/c has indigenous graphics hardware, which may have caused the system to discard or overwrite my original graphics driver, I thought, so I embarked on a whole trail of obtaining Graphics cards, and the appropriate drivers, which I thought would be sure to provide the option. Still no luck, even after trying both monitors and their official drivers.

Having failed to be offered 1440×900 with either of two other graphics boards and their drivers, I bought a third card identical to the one in my old m/c which is a 128MB AGP ATi 1024-9197-00-SA Radeon 9000 VGA Graphics Video Card with S-Video. You guessed it; still no luck. I even regressed to a 2004 version of the Graphics card driver without avail.

In desperation, I quarantined all .dll files and .sys files which begin with ati and imported the ones from my old PC. That is how it would have been after I had cloned it, of course but I have been messing with them ever since. Need I say, It still didn’t give me 1440×900, like the old one. Thinking that it must be down to some difference in the graphics card, I swapped them as well. You may remember I got a second card, identical according to the spec, with the old one. Yes you guessed it; it still doesn’t work. The list under List All Modes seemed the same (extensive, I didn’t check every option) but in the old m/c both cards produced two extra options for 1440×900 which were not present in the new m/c. If there is an application extension in the old m/c, it would have been moved to the new m/c, when I first copied the drive.

The other difference is the monitor driver; the old m/c uses the P&P; Monitor option and says, under Driver Details “No driver is required or has been installed for this device”. Presumably a plug and play device supplies its own parameters. Do you know whether these are refreshed at each boot-up? I am only thinking that the P&P; option in the new m/c may still be retaining the data from a monitor, of earlier use. I cannot force Windows to refresh this data because both my screens are of the same type and changing them would not invoke the Found New Hardware flag. I have serious doubts that the new m/c is detecting the monitor. I have, of course installed the correct drivers for both of my (similar) monitors in the new m/c, manually but these only have the effect of filtering out modes, from the List All Modes list, to permit selection of those suitable for the monitor, out of the original set.
