nv50a Gateway, when I press start all I see is a black screen dead in the water. Have removed battery and power cord then held power button for 10 seconds as manual instructed still same results.

Do you mean the hard drive makes the normal sounds as
it loads the operating system, or do you have a CD drive
that is making the normal sounds at startup when it looks
for a disk? Or maybe you hear both?
As Derek said, if you never see anything on the screen at
all, then it is a hardware problem. You might be able to
find a place that will diagnose your problem for free. They
will then tell you how much they’ll charge to fix it. If you want
to open the case to find the problem yourself, I’m sure we
can guide you. Derek already said what to check first.
