Solved Built-in & USB Smart Card Reader Drives No Longer Detected

  • 2

Suddenly my Smart Card drives (both the built-in multicard reader and a USB plug-in multicard reader) are not showing up in My Computer.
I tried Control Panel/Administrative Tools/ Services and scrolled down to smart card reader, which was not showing the word “started” in the rightmost column. I started it, rebooted (numerous times) and eventually changed the start setting from “manual” to “automatic”. Nothing worked.
The first sign of any problem was when I connected my friend’s Nikon camera with his specific USB cable, which normally would have started up Canon Camera Window [as my smart card used to, and my Olympus SP-800UZ camera would do if I hadn’t left the cable in a hotel in India before it was ever connected to my computer!]. However, the Canon software did not work, and to download my friend’s photos I had to use the ordinary Microsoft software, which successfully downloaded the jpg and movie files (via his USB cable). However, after that, I have had nothing but problems, and have run out of ideas to solve the problem – very frustrating!

  1. The bottom line for the masses of interested readers is that the problem seems to have been a hardware fault in the card reader – fixed by simply replacing it.

There are no separate drivers for these card readers – apparently they are built into Windows XP.

Seems like I’m talking to myself in an empty room here – could this be because the site moderator has moved the post to a place where no user thinks to look?
