Brand New DVD Disc Shows Full But No Files Yet Written To It

  • 2

Installed LG DVD device & driver recently, and inserted new Sony DVD-RW disc on d:\ drive. It shows as no files yet written but shows disk full under the properties General tab. Went to DOS prompt under Run option, typed in cmd and then chkdsk d: to check possible hidden files on the disc – it returned the message “cannot open volume for direct access”. Went back to the properties under recording tab and checked off “enable cd recording on this drive”, and drive still shows as full. Thought perhaps may be a problem with drag and drop software for this recording drive, and checked and unchecked the box showing “enable DNA on your drives”, both options with no success (i.e. still shows disc as full). In addition, I’ve installed ROXIO Creator 2012 to use as my video recording software and am informed that this software works well with any media recording mfgr except for Memorex (I’m surprised , I would have thought that the media dvds should be transparent to any the DVD burning software?).

Can someone please help me?

  1. The last time I looked on their web site, LG lists various brands for individual types of burnable disks, but only ONE brand for all types. That brand is sold as the Verbatim brand in North America.

For any optical drive, you’re not likely to have a problem with a brand of disks not listed in their compatible media list if it’s a CD-R or a DVD-R, but you MAY have problems if it’s another type of burnable disk.

Never install more than one burning program that did not come with Windows in Windows. (XP has a simple CD burning program built into it.)
If you do install more than one they’re likely to clash with each other and cause you problems.

If you’re using Roxio’s burning program, it may have bugs. See if there are any updates available for it.
If updates are available I recommend you do this BEFORE installing them (and you should also do this BEFORE you install the Roxio software initially).

NOTE that sometimes the resident module(s) of anti-malware programs – a part that runs all the time scanning for suspicious activity – will interfere with the proper installation of third party software, or major Microsoft updates that cannot be installed automatically by Automatic Update, the software will not install properly, and you may get no indication of that at all while installing the software.
To avoid that possibility, you should always DISABLE the resident module(s) of anti-malware programs, BEFORE you install third party software (software other than most Microsoft Updates, etc., that did not come with Windows ), especially when it’s a major or complicated software package.
E.g. if you are using the free or paid version of AVG, you should disable the Resident Shield in AVG’s ‘s settings in Windows (in AVG 2012 that’s done under the title AntiVirus). In Norton (Symantec) products, there may be several things you need to disable, or set so they don’t load for a specific short amount of time.
If you don’t know how to do that, tell us which anti-malware software you are using.
When you are sure the software has installed correctly, re-enable the resident module(s).
