Subject: after xp repair continous rebootingOS: xpCPU/Ram: 512 ramModel/Manufacturer: compaq |
Comment: I have recently performed a repair on xp using my windows disc and after the forced reboot the pc reaches the windows logo and just reboots and this is all it does now. I would appreciate it someone could give me a step by step guide on how to fix this problem but without formatting the hard drive.

Reply: (edit)Repairing the OS won't do anything as far as resetting passwords. To get to Safe Mode, you press F8 after post. Life's more painless for the brainless.

Reply: (edit)Did you Repair using a M$ Windows XP CD or Compaq Restore CD's? There is nothing to learn from someone who already agrees with you.

Reply: (edit)What do you mean by after post. And I found a way to use the windows repair to acess the user admin station and remove the password but it never finished the repair after the forced reboot and now it gets to the logo and reboots again

Reply: (edit)Post is Power-On Self Test which runs when the computer first boots. When you see that, pressing F8 will get you into the Safe Mode boot menu. Sounds like the Repair didn't finish properly. I'd run it again, but you'll still have the issue of not being able to authenticate without your password. Life's more painless for the brainless.

Reply: (edit)A virus was known to do that before a patch. A restore might have removed that patch. As above try safe mode, see event viewer, look for services that are forcing it to reboot. Set service to something other than reboot. Get service packs. "Best Practices", Event viewer, host file, perfmon, are in my top 10
