i have placed the same 40 g/b hdd into two machines neither of them work any more.was it me or the hard drive.did nothing else just took one out and put the other in,

Did you try putting the original
disk back in and rebooting? There are
alot of reasons why a disk wouldn't work
but, while certainly possible, it is unlikely
that a disk would short out a machine.
