Device Manager Error – SM Bus Controller<\/p>\n

\nYour Computing Net Forum has had a high recommendation on Gizmo’s website and so I hope that you will be able to guide me in a right direction in solving my issue. This is my first post here.
\nI’m helping a friend to get his Pavilion p6-2022uk desktop PC working again so that he can install his brand new Epson printer via USB.<\/p>\n
During the printer installation I found out that 4 out of the existing 6 USB ports on his desktop PC were no longer working and numerous attempts to revive them just did not succeed. The first working USB connects to his keyboard and the second USB to his mouse.<\/p>\n
And then we noticed in Device Manager the following error:<\/p>\n
SM Bus Controller<\/p>\n
Reinstall the drivers for this device (Code 18)<\/p>\n
After searching for suitable driver on HP website for HP Pavilion p6-2022uk model.I decided to install HP Driver SP56697.exe
\nI hope the driver we were attempting to install is the correct one for this PC and Windows 7 version.
\nIt did not fix the problem. As right after the restart we were seeing an exclamation mark error in Device Manager:<\/p>\n

a, If the automatic installation failed, what would be the correct way to install driver manually?<\/p>\n
b, Is there anything else apart from usual switching off of the antivirus software that can block or prevent installation of the correct driver?<\/p>\n
I would really welcome any pointers and steps to be taken to resolve this issue.
