I understand using Format will not fully erase your data and a third party recovery program can recover some of the data in the disk. I’m not sure how accurate this info is. But the safest and sure way to delete data completely is to use a third party program ( the military also use a similar one ). I’ve been using this for years, and is also a free program. Have a look here http://download.cnet.com/Eraser/300…
It may take a few hours to completely clean out your hard disk, depending on how big is your drive. But good luck and I hope this is still useful to you.

Before you start you might like to runa copy of Magic Jellybean. If this comes up with a key in five groups of five number then are probably good to go. If it comes up with anything else then you almost certainly have a pirated version of Windows 7
The legaility of the downloads from Ditial River may be debatable but the are safe to use. I have one myself. But without a genuine licence key they are useless.
As to whether you need the 32 bit version or the 64 bit version is dependant on the hardware of the laptop. You can find out what you have now from Computer>properties. Assuming to manage to extract a valid key using Magic Jellybean you need to install the same version.

There are two things you should try, first install a program that you know is modern like Firefox, openoffice, or something else you know is current and trusted. If it installs fine, then the system is fine and you should try installing then under compatibility mode. If the modern trusted program does not install then you need to do a system restore to a date before anyone tried installing any of these games and try the test again. Compatibility mode can often allow you to run older programs, but if the program or installer tries to do something that Windows 7 cannot allow, then it will still fail or cause other problems.
You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.
