Solved No Drives Found During Windows 98 Install

  • 5

Im trying to install windows 98 on my computer, currently I have windows 7 and linux mint intalled on two other partitions on the one harddrive I have, I’m attempting to install windows 98 on a new third partation.

When installing i select start computer with cd-rom support.

then the screen says: this driver is provided by Oak technology inc……then info about the driver….Device Name: OEMCD001

but right after that it say: No drives found, aborting installation

from their it brings me to a dos prompt,

I’m not really sure where to go from here, I think maybe it has something to do with config.sys and autoexec.bat? Do i need to edit those somehow? download a compatible driver?

I will do whatever it takes to get a native install of windows 98 working on machine, and i mean WHATEVER IT TAKES

here is link to the hardware on my computer:

  1. Most likely the problem is that your computer has an SATA drive which is not supported by Windows 98. SATA was developed long after Win98 was released. That can likely be overcome but I expect that will be only the beginning of your problems.

A big problem (but not the only one) is going to be the lack of device drivers. The Windows 98 install CD won’t have drivers for devices that did not exist when it was produced. It is unlikely that the manufacturer will provide drivers for an obsolete OS.

Installing Win98 is likely to be a long hard road if it is possible at all.

If you really must run Win98 your best option is to install a virtual machine like VirtualPC or VirtualBox and install Win98 on that. This will be much easier and provide greater flexibility in use.
