Daisy Chain Routers For (2) Networks

Hi,

I’m setting up (2) networks in my apt. with a Netgear wireless router (#1) and a Linksys WRT54GX2 router (#2). I want to isolate the Linksys as its own network off one of the wired ports from the Netgear, so it needs to be its own network and not just an access point.

The purpose of having (2) networks is that my roommates use the Netgear located in one of their bedrooms for wireless in the apt. and I want my own network (wireless and wired) fully accessible and modifiable by me (the Linksys #2). So router (#1) just needs to service internet to my roomate’s computers and to feed wired internet to router (#2). I have the equipment already so no need to tell me a simple network switch will do the trick.

I don’t quite understand how to set this up. Right now the Internet port on the Linksys (#2) is connected to one of the network ports on the Netgear (#1). I disabled LAN DHCP on the (#2), but their is also Internet DHCP; do I disable that too?

Do I need to set a Subnet Mask on (#1) or a Static IP of some sort?

Any help would be appreciated.

    1. It’s been awhile since I’ve cascaded routers, but I believe it goes something like this:

      **************************************************************
Router/Network 1 -
WAN: IP, Subnet Mask, Default Gateway, DNS all assigned by ISP.
LAN: IP=192.168.1.1, 
Subnet Mask=255.255.255.0, 
DHCP Server=Up to you. If yes, starting address 192.168.1.100, 
                                 ending address 192.168.1.150

Hosts on Network 1:
IP address=192.168.1.? (DHCP or static)
Default Gateway=192.168.1.1
DNS=192.168.1.1 (or ISP's DNS servers)

Router 2 -
WAN: IP=192.168.1.2, 
Subnet Mask=255.255.255.0, 
Default Gateway=192.168.1.1, 
DNS Server=192.168.1.1

LAN: IP=192.168.2.1, 
Subnet Mask=255.255.255.0
DHCP Server=Up to you. If yes, starting address 192.168.2.100, 
                                 ending address 192.168.2.150

Hosts on Network 2:
IP address=192.168.2.? (DHCP or static)
Default Gateway=192.168.2.1
DNS=192.168.2.1 (or ISP's DNS servers)

      Because router 2’s WAN port is connected to router 1’s LAN, it becomes the “gateway” for it’s LAN (192.168.2.*) to router 1’s LAN, much like router 1’s WAN port is connected to the ISP’s “LAN” (via cable modem, DSL, whatever), making router 1 the “gateway” for it’s LAN (192.168.1.*) to that network/internet (*.*.*.*).

      Because the two LANs are different networks (192.168.1.* and 192.168.2.*), subnetting rules will prevent the hosts on those different networks from seeing each other.
