After Boot Up On Xp The Screen Goes White

when I boot up the desktop comes up for a few seconds then goes white it I touch the on off button the desktop returns then the system turns off
yes it starts ok in safe mode

  1. You said it starts OK in safe mode. Doesn’t that mean you get to the safe mode desktop? If so, what’s stopping you from doing a system restore? START–PROGRAMS–ACCESSORIES–SYSTEM TOOLS–SYSTEM RESTORE on my XP machine. It’ll be similar for Vista.
    You can also start restore from safe mode command prompt by typing rstrui.exe at the prompt.

    If you mean ‘system restore’ isn’t setup (rather than safe mode not being setup) then I guess you’re outa luck there. Besides what others have suggested you can fiddle with the display settings or reinstall video drivers. If you installed new software that may have caused the problem, uninstall it.

  2. Reinstalling video drivers or uninstalling software that may have caused the problem, as already mentioned, are the only things I can think of. Well, other than a fresh install. Does the hard drive have a restore partition or do you have restore disks for it?
