1TB Western Digital External Hard Drive Crashed

  • 1

I have 1 TB west digital portable hard drive that stopped working. When it was working I used to power it up and connect the USB the light flashes for few seconds and appears on computer. Now when I plug in the light lits up but does not flash anymore. I removed it from the plastic cover and I found out that the USB soldering got loose. I am think about buying a USB to sata adapter, but since this hard drive was made to be portable if works. Any help I really appreciated.

  1. If it is the actual case, including the soldering etc. on the usb connector, either get another case and install the drive in that. Or as you are thinking… get a sata to usb adapter kit. These can be dock style – place drive in dock and connect via usb to a computer; or small set of cables and connector which obviously fits the sata connecotron your hard drive.
I have a cable kit for both sata and eide; have used it a few times with no problems. But a “permanent” case/enclosure is better if wishing to use drive regularly, and/travel with it… So I’d advise a suitable external case.

Actual drive physical size determines case options. Some 2.5 ins dives are a wee bit too thick for some cases – so wise to check your drive dimensions and any possible case/enclosure with that in mind.

Can look up the cases I have used/have tomorrow and post details here.

Which WD drive do you have – model number?
