Is There Any Solution To Opening/Reading An Old Floppy Disk

  • 2

I’m trying to open an old ‘imation 2hd ibm /1.44mb” floppy disk…
2 different computers have said”disk is not formatted, would you like to do this now”…
Very important data was put on disk in 2006; how can I retrieve my information. – (Won’t I wipe out all pre-exsisting data on disk if its re-formatted? )
Thank you

  1. Does the floppy show in Windows Disk Management? If so, is there a drive letter assignment?

You might be able to run recuva in it, or Easeus Partition recovery.

Get both at the links below.

  2. Hi Elizzabeth,
try reading the floppy on the slowest pc you can find.

Was the floppy written to on a pc,or something else, like a mac?

If the floppy is very old, could it have been used as DD, when it has the extra hole for HD?

Not sure what you mean by 2HD when describing the floppy.

Nbrane – surely debug will not work, if the pc does not see the floppy as formatted.

Good Luck – Keep us posted.

  3. If the disk was previously used only with older OS’s it may be a problem with the ‘media descriptor byte’:

    There’s a script fix in # 10 here:
