Windows Vista Will Not Boot With Error Code C0000218

  • 23

I am having a problem getting my notebook to boot up. It will not boot into safe mode nor any of the advanced options at this time. Here is the info on the computer and the error code:
HP G70 Notebook PC
Intel Pentium Dual-Core CPU T4200 @ 2.00GHz
RAM 3GB
Vista Home

Error Code in shortened form is c0000218.

This is the actual stop code:

STOP: c0000218 {Registry File Failure} The registry cannot load the hive (file): \SystemRoot\System32\Config\DEFAULT or its log or alternate. It is corrupt, absent, or not writable.

Any suggestions?

  1. “STOP: c0000218 {Registry File Failure} The registry cannot load the hive (file): \SystemRoot\System32\Config\DEFAULT or its log or alternate. It is corrupt, absent, or not writable”
    Yep, googling c0000218 reported that.
You are going to need a Vista disc.

Ask everyone you meet, work, schools, friends, relies, someone is bound to have a copy of Vista Home.
Then use it to run chkdsk.

Then Re Safe Mode. Even if you can get to the Command Prompt option it can be done from there, so let us know.

  2. Here are some other possibles, they will reley on you having System restore enabled on the faulty drive.

Slave the drive in another machine. Look for your system restore folder & if found, look for the corrupt file name.
Rename the SystemRoot\System32\Config\DEFAULT to .old and then copy a previous version from the snapshot folder of system restore point.
Or, use this to do above.
    R-Linux Data Recovery

If R-Linux gets you a Command Prompt, you can run chkdsk.
