Running GTA V Smoothly On AMD A8 7650K APU

  • 1

I’m building a budget gaming rig for my father, and managed to get it down to $250 CAD by combining an AMD A8 7650K APU with 8GB G.SKILL Ripjaws X DDR3 RAM and an MSI A68HM-E33 motherboard. The rest of the PC will be built from some old parts I have laying around.

I have absolutely no experience with APUs, but I have seen a few videos on YouTube showing gameplay of GTA V on this APU at about 30FPS.

Before I go about ordering the parts, would anybody happen to know what settings/overclocking would be needed to have this APU play GTA V decently? It’s the only game he’ll be playing on it, so I would like to make sure it runs somewhat smoothly. Graphics quality isn’t really a concern considering he’s been playing the PS3 version for the past few years.

The system will be connected to a 1080p LG HDTV through HDMI.

SAPPHIRE AMD Radeon HD 5770 Vapor-X
Samsung 840 EVO 120GB SSD (Windows 7 Ultimate)
Toshiba 2TB HDD

  1. To increase the FPS, you might have to lower the game settings & the gaming resolution. Otherwise you might wanna consider getting a gaming graphics card. Make sure you have a decent power supply, just in case. Newegg has the Corsair 430W on sale for $20 or $25 (for modular), or the 600W for $36, all prices are after rebate.

You’d be better off getting a board based on the A78 chipset. The A68 is considered an entry level chipset recommended for A4 & A6 APUs. The A78 is better for overclocking plus it supports PCIe 3.0 if you decided to get a graphics card. Also, the RAM should be DDR3-2133.
