Solved Printer Not Avaialble

  • 3

After installing the drivers for the printer, the PC shows the Printer in Printers & Faxes, but it’s status is ‘Not Available’ – connects via Parallel Port
One thing I notice is that when I reboot the machine, I will see the status as Ready for a very short period of time before it switches to ‘Not Avaialble’.
The printer will print a self diagnostic page just fine and up until a few weeks ago it worked just fine. But I don’t know what changed that may have caused this issue.

  1. Since this thread was started I had occasion to troubleshoot an old Epson 400 inkjet that just stopped printing. Went through checking drivers, ports and parallel cables. What it came down to was low ink. The owner removed the ink tanks and shook them. Re-installed them and then I re-installed the printer. I started working after that.

Going back to the first post it is not clear if this printer was previously installed on that computer. The parallel port type may be set wrong. I think the default type is SPP, which works with older printers. Your printer may need a more advanced setting.

Find those settings in integrated peripherals in the BIOS.
