Hi! My HP laptop was working fine and all of a sudden half of the screen went dim. What could have caused this and is it something I can fix? Thanks!!

Not for the faint hearted and cleanliness is essential.
It is just possible that there is some info for your own particular screen if you let us know the computer model number.
Best first check that all connections between the screen and motherboard are good, although I agree that backlight failure is most likely.
