I just noticed that my laptop’s screen shows a white spot. The laptop is HP G72.
I don’t think that this is a dead pixel. I have never seen what a dead pixel looks like, but it is my understanding that dead pixels are just… dead, meaning that they do not emit light at all, and just look like dark dots on your screen.
In my case we have the opposite phenomenon: the area where the problem is emits even more light than it is supposed to, creating that white spot effect.
The white spot is best visible on a lighter background.
Here is a video of a guy who has a very similar problem. In his case the laptop is a ThinkPad and the spots are more than one, but they look very much like the spot that I have on my HP G72 screen.

Sometimes image persistence can be cured, there is a good Wiki article that describes what causes image persistence and step you can take to try and fix it.
