Solved HP Computer Won’t Boot Up Or Go Into BIOS

  • 0

I am trying to fix a computer for a friend. It’s an HP desktop, running Windows Vista. I don’t know much more about it, because I cannot get it to turn on.
The message I get is

“Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key”

I tried to get into BIOS but it won’t go. I have tried F2, F8, F11, esc, I dunno. What should I try first? This is the problem they were having with it and were hoping that I would be able to fix it. I do not have a copy of the Vista install disk.

OMG don’t judge me!

  1. Is it saying anything else? It sounds like it can’t recognize any bootable devices. This is most likely due to a bad hard drive. You could try buying an external USB hard drive case, and testing the drive with another computer. Having a Vista Boot Disc would be very nice in this situation because you could use system recovery to try and restore the drive.

Another option would be to create a MS-DOS boot disc on a flash drive:

Boot the computer with the flash drive in it, and it should load dos by default. Then you could run CHKDSK on C:\ to see if it’s a problem with the drive.

It is very odd that it won’t let you into BIOS, which indicates that it might just be a problem with the motherboard. Does the screen say anything else when you boot the computer?

Please list exact make/model of the computer.
