My laptop (Windows 7, emachines G640, P320 Athlon, 3GB Ram) does not boot up, not even a hard disk spin. I have tried recycling it; turned it off, unplugged it from the mains and removed the battery. Then held down the start button for a full minute, after which I plugged it back in and restarted it. But I got the same result; nothing..

This has always been a noisy drive. Also, now the led just blinks intermittently.
How noisey, and what type if noise…; clicks, ticking, groans etc…?
Any of those could/would suggest a drive is possibly faulty – on it’s way out; even if like that from the start. Most drives these days are pretty quiet overall. Although sometimes a usb-case/housing can act as sound amplifier to a modest degree… and as a result a drive sound a little noisier than it might otherwise; especially during actual seek ‘n read/write operations by the drive’s head… But if in general spin mode it is noisey… I’d be somewhat concerned overall… regardless
However, as you have the same situation with another drive installed… it does not sound like it’s the (original) drive itself; but likely something internal re’ the motherboard; even something as simple as a loose connection… Not entirely unknown for onboard connectors to loosen etc… But that of course means “going inside”… and not everyone is really into that routine…
On-board power supply “might be failing; the chips are reasonably robust these days; but then they can fail… Even plug-in chips can work loose (although not very often an occurrence these days – unless one is really violent with the kit…)?
If you put the original drive into another system, does it show there – at least try to boot etc; does the drive led (if there is one on that system) show/indicate there is a drive there? Even better of course connect to another system via usb adapter (as suggested earlier)? I f the drive shows up via usb – then it’s not the drive… Something is amiss in the drive’s laptop original home…
I find a usb-adpater kit invaluable these days; both to test a drive, and also to temporarily access one via a working system…
