Solved Two 500GB Drives…Same Data…Different Dree Space?

  • 6

I bought two identical 500GB hard drives for backup of files. I backed up 356GB of data (205,436 files) on both drives.

However, even thought both drives say that all 356GB are on both…the FREE SPACE on the drives is now drastically different. One has 84.3GB of 465 free…and the other has 108GB of 465 free.

How can these two drives now have different amounts of free space? What would cause this??? Thanks in advance.

  1. When you delete files in Windows they go into the Recycle Bin, rather than being taken off the disk. Until you empty the Recycle Bin they will still appear as used space – hence the reduction in free space – but will automatically be deleted if the space is needed.
