eMachines EMCP61M

Ok so I was wondering whether or not this computer stands a chance. I bought it about a year ago at Wal-Mart as a computer for the wife, but since she’s done with it I want to know if it’s salvageable.

So the board type is an EMCP61M.
Socket: AM2 (940)

The current processor is an AMD Athlon Neo MV-28 (1.8GHz) designation AMD Athlon 2850e.

The computer currently has Windows 7 Home Premium (came installed) and it runs fantastic for average computing. I mean there is zero hang time on this thing. Everything just snaps up when I want it to. However, it can’t handle bigger loads and before I go buying a PCI-E Video Card or upgrading the PSU I want to make sure this thing can handle a new CPU first. Maybe a low end dual core or something along those lines.

Is it upgradeable or should I try and dump it as soon as possible? I’m not a big fan of wasting things so I’ll do my best within a reasonable budget to upgrade it so it can survive at least a little longer. Hell, I have an XPS M1530 that I’m currently fixing up.

Anyways, can it be upgrade and if so, with what?

  1. Bigger loads….Games or number crunching??? In general, I would say buy a better video card if it’s a gaming issue or add more system ram. The trouble is; for good results I would get a better motherboard, that could run a better chip, and faster ram etc. So to just replace the chip will improve performance, but, you may be as far ahead adding more ram or the vid card….when does this bog down??? It’s like buying a racing engine, but you leave the street tires on the car.
