    TLDR

    • Atomic Alchemy, Oklo’s subsidiary, obtained NRC materials license authorization for isotope handling, processing, and distribution at its Idaho facility.
    • This regulatory approval enables Atomic Alchemy to begin commercial isotope sales operations from the Idaho Radiochemistry Laboratory.
    • The approved license applies specifically to isotope operations, while Oklo’s advanced nuclear reactor projects remain under separate NRC review.
    • A separate Department of Energy agreement supports development of Oklo’s inaugural reactor facility at Idaho National Laboratory.
    • Shares climbed 4.6% during premarket hours before the company’s quarterly earnings release scheduled for Tuesday evening.

Oklo achieved a significant regulatory breakthrough on Tuesday, marking progress for its subsidiary operations. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission granted a materials license to Atomic Alchemy, the wholly-owned subsidiary that Oklo acquired in 2025, representing the company’s first regulatory clearance from the NRC.

The approved license grants Atomic Alchemy authority to receive, store, process, and distribute isotopes at the Idaho Radiochemistry Laboratory located in Idaho Falls. The authorization covers handling up to 2 Curies of Ra-226, alongside Co-60 and Am-241 designated for calibration applications.

These isotopes serve critical functions across medical treatments, scientific research, industrial manufacturing, and national defense applications. Oklo CEO Jacob DeWitte highlighted the market opportunity: “Demand for critical isotopes is rising, but U.S. supply remains limited.”

This approval creates tangible near-term business opportunities. Atomic Alchemy gains the ability to launch commercial sales from its Idaho laboratory, establishing the first revenue-generating capability within Oklo’s portfolio. The parent company currently operates without revenue.

Clarification matters here: this license differs from the reactor authorization that investors have been monitoring closely. Oklo’s advanced fast reactor technology continues progressing through NRC evaluation. Electricity sales depend entirely on securing that separate regulatory clearance for the company’s primary long-term business model.

    What the License Actually Covers

The NRC issued this authorization following comprehensive review procedures and a physical inspection of the Idaho facility. Atomic Alchemy’s strategy involves recovering and processing retired radium sources — materials previously categorized as waste — transforming them into valuable feedstock for medical isotope manufacturing, particularly for targeted alpha therapy applications.

The laboratory operations connect to broader expansion plans. Atomic Alchemy is advancing development of a multi-reactor isotope foundry featuring up to four Versatile Isotope Production Reactor (VIPR) systems, each designed with approximately 15 MWth capacity.

Tuesday delivered additional corporate developments. Oklo finalized an agreement with the U.S. Department of Energy establishing support for design, construction, and operational phases of its inaugural reactor at Idaho National Laboratory through the DOE’s Reactor Pilot Program.

The Meta Partnership and Earnings Watch

Oklo’s nuclear development strategy has secured backing from prominent technology companies. The company maintains a partnership with Meta Platforms for building a nuclear campus in southeastern Ohio. BofA Securities characterized this arrangement as “one of a few firm, binding partnerships today” within the broader nuclear energy sector.

Shares gained 4.6% during premarket trading hours on Tuesday following the announcement. Oklo’s quarterly earnings report is scheduled for release after market close that same day.

The company maintains its timeline targeting commercial nuclear power production beginning in late 2027 or 2028.
