Problems with floppy disk drivePosted by Neil Badke on March 16, 1996 at 17:52:17:
I have an AST Advantage 486 dx2 66mhz 8M RAM running windows 3.1 and DOS 6.22. In File Manager when I try to view the files on a high density 1.44M 3.5 inch disk in the a: drive it either indicates that there are no files on the drive (even though there are) or it states that the disk needs formatting with the message "Error selecting drive, the disk in drive A is not formatted." (even though it doesn’t need formatting) I am also unable to format my floppy disks or to save to or open 1.44M floppy disks in all my programs. When I do this I get messages like “File error has occured” or “the disk drive is not valid” depending on the program. I have these problems with all the different brands of 1.44M floppy disks that I have tried. I get similar results with my older double sided/double density disks except for one, for which I can view files but not open them. In DOS when I try to read a disk in the a: drive it says “General Error Reading Drive A” and sometimes says “Fail on INT 24.” When I run scandisk on a floppy disk in drive a: it says “Scandisk encountered a data error while reading the FAT on drive A” and it can’t examine the disk. I believe these troubles started after someone else was using the computer to access files on a double sided/double density disk from a DOS program running under windows. I have used both Mcafee Viruscan and F-Prot to scan for viruses but have found none. Please help my ailing floppy drive. Thank You!
