I don't know if this is the right forum or the virus forum but here goes anyway.

About a month ago I got a virus (don't know how it got through firewall) and I successfully removed it.

After that I noticed little things weren't right with my computer. The most annoying thing was browser speeds. My missus uses facebook every day so when she clicks the login link it takes over a minute to display even though I have a 6Mb ADSL connection. My other PC loads it straight away.

I have run spyware scans and anti-virus and got rid of any spyware but it still went slow.

Last night I noticed it decided to restart itself after a few minutes and it got worse today. I can't even get into windows before it restarts itself and finally it turned itself off.

I recently flashed the BIOS with an updated version.

What could be causing the computer to restart/shutdown? Could it be bad graphics drivers and/or the processor getting too hot? I read somewhere that outdated graphics drivers can cause problems with browsers but the shutting down thing is more serious.

I have order an Arctic Cooling cpu fan so that may make a difference.

Has anyone else had these problems?

Thats because firewalls are not meant to and cannot stop viruses. Anti-virus applications do that and they need to be running all the time. An occasional virus scan is not enough.

Spontaneous shutdown have multiple causes. The first thing to check is the power supply. check with a know good power supply.

Shutdown during boot up could be the power supply or it could be the CPU overheating. what are your CPU temps?

I have a new case and the power supply is 450W and on the case is a temp monitor but it doesn't work.

I don't know what the CPU temp is.

I have a different hard drive to which the virus was on installed now with a fresh copy of XP. I have another power supply so i'll try putting that one in as well as a new cooler and see if that stops the shut downs.

Next time the computer shuts down immediately reboot and enter the BIOS screens. Under PC Health you will find the CPU temps.
