Ok, this happens on a pretty normal basis. It seems every few days, my e-mail stops working. I cannot download e-mail from any of my 3 pop mail e-mail accounts, nor does my mail notifier work in my system tray. Now we do use direcway for internet and we surf through a proxy server. Sometimes I get it where all I can do is browse unsecure websites. But that isn't the case right now. I can do everything else except download e-mail. I can go to secure websites and I can go to newsgroups. But when I try to download my e-mail, I get the error

Task 'pop.mail.yahoo.com - Sending and Receiving' reported error (0x80042108) : 'Outlook is unable to connect to your incoming (POP3) e-mail server. If you continue to receive this message, contact your server administrator or Internet service provider (ISP).'

I get that same exact error for all three e-mail servers. When I restart my computer, everything works again. Does anyone have any idea why this happens? If it wasn't for this, I would probably never restart my computer.

And, just in case anyone thinks of this, I already did. I don't have more than one instance of Outlook running in my task manager. That was happening on a pretty normal basis so I made a batch file that automatically closed any instances of outlook before the computer opens Outlook.

I would have a chat with your ISP. If they don't have a solution, then I don't have any other suggestions. Sorry.

This sounds to me like the case of a mail proxy unknown to the user. There are two that I am aware of that are not detected by normal means, but a scan of the system (or two) should alert you of the more common ails.

Using POP from Yahoo isn't the most reliable mail service in the world so it isn't amazing to consider Yahoo is causing the problem either. Now I know that Yahoo (and many others) have been upgrading their systems, perhaps checking to make sure the config hasn't changed may help.

I'm not using only Yahoo POP mail. I have a pop server through yahoo, starfieldtech (which hosts one of my domains), and register.com (which hosts my other domain). I doubt all three pop servers would be having problems at the exact same time everyday and, quincidently, after restarting, it fixes all three servers everytime. It is something to do with my computer. I am 100% sure of that. I am just not sure what.

Outlook has a bad tendancy to hang itself due to connection problems. In some cases it resulted in a reboot before I could see reliable responses from Outlook.

Again I'm going with something on your machine in between the client and the server.

But it isn't an outlook problem. Because when it happens, I can't receive e-mail with outlook nor can my mail notifier work. My mail notifier in my taskbar can't connect to the server when it happens. So it isn't an outlook problem. It is something to do with the OS or protocols or something that all the programs are riding on top or use. I am thinking maybe a service. But I am not sure which service would be the culprit.

Well David, like I said before if you have a proxy intercepting your emails you won't have much luck with it until you find it and kill it.

If you need to troubleshoot your network, then try that. Does your network work? How can you prove it? Are your mail setting correct?

It's unlikely any service would interfere with your email (unless your using IMAP services but sounds like your a POP fellow)

So your going to have to do some basic troubleshooting if you want more help with this.

So is it an email problem or a network problem?

Well, I think I fixed it. Turns out it looks like it was Norton Anti-virus causing the problems. Norton says to disable incoming and outgoing virus scans. They say that the anti-virus will still scan incomming and outgoing even with it turned off but it solved my send/receive problems. I guess I am not 100% sure it is solved. I just haven't had the problem for about a week now. But I'll have to wait a little longer and see if it pops back up again.

LIKE I SAID BEFORE ....

If you are dealing with UNKNOWN PROXIES (WHICH MOST AV MAIL SOLUTIONS ARE) then until you resolve that it's going to be a challenge to determine the actual problem.

At this stage, I'd be worried why NAV is having trouble with your emails...which may suggest you have a trojan on your box fiddling with your settings against your will.

Good luck!

I don't think I have a trojan. I have scanned my computer wiht TrojanHunter and it doesn't find anything.
