Comment: Previously I had win2k and winxp on two seperate disks. Then I had to reinstall xp but at the time of installation forgot to take out the win2k disk. So Now I have got a boot loader. I still have win2k and win xp on two seperate drives. I want to remove this boat loader entirely so that I am able to once again boot from any two of my hard disks just by directing the bios. thanks

Reply: (edit)I think you have a problem bigger than just removing the boot loader. When you reinstalled XP with the Win2K disk connected, that means XP was probably installed as a D: (or some other) drive. I think that will mess up your plan to use the bios to switch drives. I suspect that you will have to remove the Win2k drive, reinstall XP and then work on getting rid of the boot loader. That 'might' be done by removing the XP drive and running fixboot or fixmbr. By the way, I used to use the bios to select the boot drive. However when I downgraded :-) from win98 to XP, I had to give it up because I couldn't get it to work right.

Reply: (edit)The xp cd has ways to put a generic mbr on but may not work if you have odd installs. Actually I think it can pretty sure do that to either install. Be sure you have the correct disks selected in bios. C drive is only known to MS windows as the first bootable drive with a loader. As you say bios can fool the ide chain. "Best Practices", Event viewer, host file, perfmon, are in my top 10
