Comment:

I have DSL and for the past two days I keep getting the message "network cable unplugged." I may lose internet access for a couple seconds, and then it's back. Any ideas? Is there stuff I can check? Could it just be a problem with my ISP? I don't think I've changed anything about my computer in the past couple days.

thanks,
Erik

Have you checked the cable modem that your ISP provided you? You can call their techincal support and have them run remote tests on it.

Also check your cables that connect to the modem and your computer to make sure they are secure in the socket.

If the problem persists after making sure your System has No virus infection, please post again with details of your Networking such as:

1. Do you have a Homenetwork?

If yes,
A. Make and Models of Network Interface Cards in each of the PCs.

B. The Status of NIC in Device Manager of each of the PCs in the Local Area Network.

2. What device if any is interposed between the PCs and your DSL Modem.

Make and Model of the Device through which the Computers communicate to Modem and the Internet and the LAN (if present.)

3. The type of Cables connecting the PC and Modem or PC and the Device through which modem is connected.

Troubleshoot in a Network involves information of hardware and software making up the network and hence these Qs:-)

I used to have this problem every once in a while. I finally traced the problem to linksys router. I power-cycled the router and the modem and the problem went away. If this brings you no joy, I suggest you follow maad's advice for further troubleshooting.

90% of the problem is always a dodgy connection
