Comment: Once I tuen on my other computer I can't access windows(tried all of it, last good settings, safe mode ...) and the SMART Disk Failure message appears. I'm using a DOS boot floppy to try to see if anything is wrong but i can't even access the c:\ and d:\ hard drives. Can anyone tell me how to back my tax files before the hard drive dies.

Reply: (edit)When you get S.M.A.R.T error message, it's usually the iceberg of a failing HD. Your floppy disc will not be able to read the HD if the file system is NTFS. Is your HD file system NTFS?

Reply: (edit)Go into your BIOS screen and DISABLE smart monitoring. Then it won't warn you anymore, and you can access. BUT understand, you have been warned now and it is time to replace the drive immediately. Any more use of the drive could be your last chances to back up the data before it fails completely.

Reply: (edit)Worst comes to worst- google to 200 ways to save your hard drive. Freezing, dropping it, etc, to retrieve the data to another HD. ALWAYS BACKUP!!

Reply: (edit)"yes it is NTFS" This is why your floppy cannot see, read or understand NTFS file system. There is no bootable NTFS disk that I know of.

Reply: (edit)I imagine you would still get SMART warning even if you have disabled the monitoring - especially when the HD began its journey to the grave.

Reply: (edit)If this were me I'd be getting the drive into another XP (or NT) PC as a slave and making an image of it and right NOW. If successful them most imaging programmes have a utility to explore their images and retrieve files (Ghost, Acronis, Drive Image, etc.) Remember, every time you run this drive up you multiply your chances of killing it completely !
