My computer won't shut down. I have to hold the button in order to shutdown. When I go to shutdown the start menu and icons disappear the screen goes black and then a message comes up from my monitor (Flatscreen Envision brand) saying "Input not Supported"
I know this message is from the monitor because when i start up the comp. the monitor always gives the "auto config" message. I tried updating the drivers for the monitor but it didnt work. I can reboot my machine fine. Any ideas?

The error message on the monitor might only be telling you that the video source is gone. What i mean is it may not be related to the shutdown problem at all. A quick way to tell is to turn the monitor on.. unplug it from the tower.. if you get the error message you posted.. then your just seeing your monitors "where did the video go" cry for help.

Typically.. shutdown problems are related to programs running in the background. When you hit ctrl/alt/dlt.. what do you see in the list?

Hit ctrl/alt/dlt.. Right click the following files and choose end task.

datemanager
ccapp
hpztsb05
hphipm11
hphmon04
smallcd
hpgs2wnd
hpgs2wnf
loadqm
hidserv
realplay
prismstn
khooker
winampa
type32

Once each task has ended. Hit the start button and shutdown the computer. Does it still hang?

If not.. one of the programs is causing the problem. You can stop them from starting with windows by removing shortcuts from the start menu/startup folder and by disabling them from msconfig. Also.. there might be something else running that isnt listed. This can also be disabled in msconfig. But before you enter msconfig.. try the rightclick end task thing.

ok i did a google search on that "input not supported" message and it turns out that my adapter refresh rate was too HIGH. I don't know how that happened but I changed it to the adapter default. Now it shuts-down. but my screen is alittle blurry.

Click Here Under Guides / References you will find several links to "Lists of startup programs" websites.

Those sites contain lists of items like the ones you listed. You can use the information at those sites to determine what those entries are and if you can disable them from starting with windows.

To get into msconfig.. hit start/ run box/ type in msconfig and hit enter. Click the "Startup" tab. and you should see some of those items listed and a few more. If your not comfortable with deciding what should go -vs- stay.. post the whole list here and someone may be able to help you. Careful while navigation msconfig. Dont change anything your not familiar with.

Same problem after installing a new graphics card. Refresh rate too high but the screen looks fine.. Lower it to get rid of error but now things are blurry. I played with the settings till i got it right. You might try posting this in the hardware forum.

Also.. you should still get rid of uneccesary items from starting with windows. Speeds things up a bit.

it's weird i've had this graphic card it isnt new...but i changed the refresh rate from 75 hz to the default rate...shut it down and it worked. Then I shut it down a second time just to make sure and I got the same message "input not supported"! I just changed it from the default to 60 hz. I will shut it down a few more times just to make sure. I also went to msconfig and disabled some things like winamp and hp stuff like you said. thanks for helping me.
