Subject: can't upgrade to ie6 SP1OS: windows meCPU/Ram: intel celeron app. 600MhzModel/Manufacturer: HP Pavillion |
Comment: I ran my recovery disc(but didn't format the hard drive). When I try to upgrade to ie 6 SP1 from Q891781 I keep getting the message- all components couldn't be installed.Reboot and try again. I did this over and over with no success even though the upgrade history says each attempt was successful. I still have outlook 5.5 and ie Q891781. By the way what version of ie is Q891781? Thanks

Reply: (edit)I followed the directions in this URL as yo suggested---http://www.mcse.ms/archive/index.ph... I got to the uninstall information folder but I don't know how to create a new folder. When I can do that I will continue with the instructions. Thanks

Reply: (edit)Yep, if you have on-board graphics you will not have the full 64MB available to the O/S, you need that much before IE6 SP1 will install, time to buy more memory....

Reply: (edit)"I got to the uninstall information folder but I don't know how to create a new folder." Right Click >> New >> Folder. ...then name the folder. You do need more memory, one's assuming you had IE6 SP1 before all this happened, you have reinstalled and updated before, right? ...continue with the instructions anyway, but if it doesn't work you have another possible reason why.
And as an alternative to using Internet Explorer you could try using a different light weight browser. K-Meleon is about your only realistic option at the moment, but it's good, secure and worth a try if you can't get IE6 SP1 up and running. It's actually preferable to running IE6 SP1 on 9x/ME anyway as it's reasonably up to date and supported - and not so heavily embedded in the operating system. Internet Explorer now stands at Internet Explorer 7 version 7.0.5730.11 +, a considerable advancement over IE6 SP1 in every important way.

Reply: (edit)Hey! I finally got ie6 sp1 installed by following the rest of the instructions after I knew how to create a folder. I had to be on the 'my computer' page for the File>new to work.I got a different result when I tried File>new on the other pages. Thanks I tried to tel you yesterday but this sight was working on it's server so my reply couldn't get through.

Reply: (edit)Firefox is great, K-Meleon is based off it. The only reason I suggested K-Meleon is because you are short on RAM, K-Meleon is ideally suited for older, under spec'd systems. But, if firefox is running ok for you, then great, keep on using it. :)

Reply: (edit)There are plenty of computers trashed every year with better specs than 600/64MB. Be alert for throwaways (especially after the holidays!) and consider asking your local computer shop if they have any cheap used memory left over from upgrades. Most shops should have a junk pile of small memory. While it is possible and practical to run low-spec systems, if one can improve them for free or dirt cheap, why not? A 256MB stick of PC133 is only about fifteen dollars new (post your system make and model if you are not sure what it takes) on pricewatch.com. You will enjoy the improved performance.
