Reply: (edit)Am working on this for a friend now also. It's tough, as the answer may be ANYTHING, something probably small. His problem is just like yours exactly. It is very common for Win 98SE. See the link mentioned above for good info. I have tried EVERYHTING posted on the WEB as a solution but no answer yet. Besides, what works for me, may not work for you, nor yours for me. http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;q238096&FR=1&LNG=ENG&SA=PER http://www.experts-exchange.com/Operating_Systems/Q_20340230.html The info below is from several different pages web sites and i have tried them all to no avail, but it's a good start.
Windows 98SE has a known glitch that causes problems during shutdown. If you own 98SE, you need to read the article at support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q238/0/96.asp or visit the site at www.aumha.org/a/shutdown.htm. If you're still having problems after you try the suggestions in the article, download the 504MB patch from the Windows Update page, where it's listed as a Critical Update. Other troubleshooting tips for Win 98 shutdowns can be found at support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q202/6/33.ASP and support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q188/8/67.ASP. The reason WIN98 does not shut down is because a lot of video card are NOT compatible with windows fast shutdown and it must be shut down. Do this in the following way. Start, Programs, Accessaries, System Tools, System Info, Tools, System comfiguration Utilities, Advance, CHECK BOX - DISABLE FAST SHUTDOWN NOTE: Remember, if you have installed The Patch, as we recommend, Fast Shutdown is no longer an option on your computer, making this tip irrelevant (or at least impractical! This is often due to problems with the ini files To determine whether your display adapter driver is compatible and working correctly: START > RUN > MSCONFIG ADVANCED > VGA 640 x 480 x 16 check box > OK Restart the computer. If you have Internet Explorer 4, there is a bug and it should be upgraded to, at least, Internet Explorer 4.01 or higher. Information in your Bootlog.txt file may help you pinpoint the cause of the shutdown problem. To check the Bootlog.txt file Use any text editor, such as Notepad, to examine the Bootlog.txt file in the root folder of your hard disk for "Terminate=" entries. These entries, located at the end of the file, may provide clues to the cause of the problem. For each "Terminate=" entry, find a matching "EndTerminate=" entry. If the last line in the Bootlog.txt file is "EndTerminate=KERNEL," Windows shut down successfully. If the last line in the Bootlog.txt file is shown in the following table, the problem may be due to the cause shown beside it. The IRQ streeing allows several PCI devices to share the same interrupt request (IRQ). If the BIOS is not fully compliant, this option may lead to machines not shutting down properly… even if 2 or more devices are not sharing an IRQ. Norton AntiVirus tries to scan the floppy drive at shut-down and hangs In the interim, I told my friend to leave his PC ON always and DISABLED the feature that says DISABLE SCANDISK AFTER BAD SHUTDOWN in the START > RUN > type msconfig > ADVANCED page.

Reply: (edit)Windows 98 SE shutdown problems Document Date: March 15, 2000 Affected products: DFE-530TX all versions ----------------------
Step 1 Make sure that you get a software patch from Microsoft with regards to Windows 98 SE shutdown problems. If you go to Microsoft support web site and do a search, you should be able to find details of this published problem. Step 2 Make sure that you have at least DFE-530TX March 2000 driver disk or newer. Shutdown problems can be caused by an infinite number of reasons and is always difficult to troubleshoot. We have found that if the symptoms were found to be related to the DFE-530TX, newer drivers will resolve most of the reported cases. Have a nice day.

Reply: (edit)I support approximately 60 Win98SE PCs and I've had a lot of shutdown problems in Win98SE on Compaq and Dell PCs, but only a few on Systemax PCs. When a user would shutdown the PC, it would stay on the Windows 98 Is Shutting Down screen for days. I had installed all of the updates from appropriate vendors website (shutdown fixes, video drivers, audio drivers, NIC drivers, etc...) and still had the problem. I had installed all of the updates from Windows Update (shutdown fix, mapped drive fix, IE 6.0 SP1, critical updates, recommended updates, etc..). I still had the problem. Finally, this is what fixed it: While in "normal" Win98SE (not Safe Mode) access your Windows Device Manager by pointing to Start, Settings, and clicking Control Panel. Double-click the System icon to bring up the System Properties window. Click the Device Manager tab. Press the Print button and select "All devices and system summary" and press OK. When it has finished printing, shutdown Win98SE and boot into Safe Mode. You can get into Safe Mode while the computer is booting by quickly pressing or before the Windows GUI starts and choosing Safe Mode. If you see the Windows GUI you missed your opportunity and you will need to cycle through, shutdown and try again. (You may have to try a couple of times to get this.) Now get into Device Manager again (while in Safe Mode). Basically you want to remove any "ghost" devices that are not printed in your system summary. It has been my experience that their are extra hard drives, display adapters, CD-ROMS, monitors, "Sound, video and game controllers", etc... in the PCs that had the shutdown problems. I believe this is a result of the manufactures "cloning" PC configurations with an imaging product like Ghost for mass producing PCs. Anyway, remove these extra devices and restart the computer in "normal mode". ***Important*** I DO NOT remove any "System Devices". I have found the most of my trouble stem from the "Sound, video and game controllers". Most of these are some Microsoft junk devices. Also, booting into Safe Mode tends to scramble the icons on your desktop, especially Network Neighborhood, Briefcase, and a few others. ***Important*** Anyway, this solution has fixed 99% of our Win98SE shutdown issues. I hope this helps someone out there.

Reply: (edit)Thank you JOHN! After spending 3 nights of trying every troubleshooting suggestion Microsoft had, and their download, I finally found John's suggestion and mention of using Dell computers so I tried it. It worked great, and solved they problem a stack of printouts couldn't resolve. Thanks again and I suggest trying it if you have a shutdown problem with 98SE. Lou
