Subject: shutdown problem-different osOS: 98seCPU/Ram: athlon xp - 512Model/Manufacturer: compaq |
Comment: Perplexing shutdown problem-compaq-a7v8x-la motherboard socket 462 Chipset VIA VT8237 Athlon Duron 512MB-DDR333 PC2700 - bios upgraded to 3.10(only one available) computer works perfectly with 98 but can not get in to run with 98se- have tried every ms patch and via driver, every permutation and still no joy. Only way to get it to shutdown, without turning off power is to use double ctrl-alt-del- won't work with shortcuts or through start menu. Have tried disabling acpi, using setup /p i, no plug and play os - and the reverse of these options. Can not figure out what is it with 98se that makes the difference. System devices show no conflicts with either os. Any ideas or info appreciated.

Reply: (edit)SE has always had that shutdown problem. These are the patches that sometimes work. I made a note of them a while back: 4756US8.exe IS THE REGULAR PATCH 260067USA8.exe IS FOR MAPPED DRIVES 243199US8.exe IS FOR NETWORK DRIVES 240075UP.exe IS FOR USBI 231134UP.exe IS FOR USB2 I think they're all MS but not sure. Even so they may not be on their site anymore. But googling the file name should turn up a download. The mapped and network drive patches sometimes work even if yours aren't set up that way. I don't remember what the USB1 and USB2 were about.

Reply: (edit)Yep, often the mapped drives fix is the one that ultimately does the trick in obstinate cases. If you have any problem getting any of the files I daresay between us we can dig them up for you. DerekW

Reply: (edit)The only patch I haven't tried that you mentioned is 231134UP.exe. Google search found nothing so if you have it let me know. Thanks

Reply: (edit)Am going to do another clean install of 98se. Any info or ideas about whether I should apply the ms patches before the via ones or does it matter?

Reply: (edit)I wasn't aware of 231134 so I haven't got it. Your shut-down problems seem far worse than most so maybe the clean install will fix it. Mostly 4756US8 does the trick, with 260067USA8 for the obstinate ones. See what happens after re-install. I don't think it matters too much about the order of updates in this instance except that 4756US8 would be my first try if the symptoms then change to just the ocassional problem. DerekW

Reply: (edit)Apologies. There was a typo when I made the text file. That file name is 241134up.exe and not 231134up. According to the date, I downloaded it about 3 1/2 years ago and made no notation about it other than the USB2. If you're going to format and reinstall SE, when installing each additional driver or patch, check to see if it hangs both before and after the installation. The shutdown problem is often driver-related and you may be able to isolate the cause.

Reply: (edit)still no luck-either haven't hit on the right fix or just won't work. Just seems so odd that would work great with 98 and not 98se. Have no problem shuting down in safe mode so must be some driver unique to se os. Thanks for your assistance.

Reply: (edit)You're welcome. One of the PC's I'm using has an old ASUS P5A-B. I've put together several systems using that model and they all have the shutdown problem. What's worse none of the patches help. So I just have the shutdown option as RESTART (which works OK) and then manually shut it off as soon as I see the posting screen.

Reply: (edit)If you did an upgrade to SE, a clean install might do it. It worked for me, back in the old days. Do yourself a favor BACKUP! Sorry, I do not check for private messages

Reply: (edit)Am making some progress- set bios to pnp os -used a combination of via 4n1 drivers - enabled devices one at a time. When I got it to work would ghost partition so as not to have to start all over from beginning. Last hurdle seems to be wifi adapter -used the ndis and mapped drive shutdown patches but have lost network neighboorhood and ability to share files. Can from safe mode load info for adhoc network, etc but when I return to normal mode, file and print sharing visible, have client for ms, but no sharing option for drives. Also shutdown again a problem - freezes after monitor blanks.

Reply: (edit)am almost there - remembered about deleting *.pwl file to restore network neighborhood - did all from safe mode - voila able to share drives, set up adhoc neighborhood; get dun to remember my password. all features seem to be working so will leave well enough alone. Just wanted to give my remedies in case it would be helpful to someone else.

Reply: (edit)shutdown now causes restart and is very slow once shutdown message appears. Also had to disable network adapter or had same problem with shutdown freeze. At this point don't want to open computer to change position of network card which might help. Will research slooow shutdown and shutdown restart to see what else might work. Not sure if this is a lesson in futility but I am willing to be a little more persistant. When I get fed up with it just ghost the working 98 os back on the computer. Thanks for asking.
