I have an annoying intermitent shutdown problem, which only seems to occur after the computer has been used on the internet.
When I select shutdown I get a "program not responding" ie the shutdown prog -do I want to wait etc. The cursor changes to a double arrow at this point. Invaribly my only way out is ctl/alt/del & restart.
Any thoughts on this?

Thanks
Dennis

Hi Dennis,

This is indicative of a program/some programs running in the background when you decide to shutdown.
1) Run a complete scan of ur machine using Spybot and Ad Aware to remove popup programs. Restart, if prompted.
2) Delete all the temp files and cookies.
3) Press a Ctrl+Alt+Del to see what are the programs running in the background. Anything unrecognizable, is to be busted.
4) Open the Registry and navigate to Hkey_Local_Machine>Software>Microsoft>Windows>Current_Version>Run and delete all the unwanted entries found.
5) Do defragment ur HDD once in 2 weeks for optimal performance...and an occasional Scandisk to correct any errors, if any.

Lemme know if this helped. Also, disable fast shutdown.

Thanks Anuj,

I've tried all the above with the exception of the registry editing, as I'm not sure what to remove.
I agree the problem is probably a background program, although I have very few running.Rnaap is the only extra one that appears after the internet &I plan to end task on this & others in a process of elimination.
I was wondering though whether with the symptoms I mentioned,if there was anything else likely to be the cause?

Dennis

You can check out the definitive troubleshooting page:

Windows Shutdown Troubleshooter

But you certainly should check for unwanted processes too. You have Spybot and Ad-aware installed (Ad-aware is difficult to install in 95)?

There is no 'fast shutdown' to disable in 95

Also, Win95 users can benefit from Win98's msconfig

Rnaap can be a persistant process and might be the culprit - you might try terminating it prior to shutting down - also consider the DUN upgrade

I'm not saying there should be a capital punishment for stupidity, but why don't we just take the safety labels off of everything and let the problem solve itself?
