Subject: SHUTDOWN problem
OS: Windows 98 SE
CPU/Ram: 256MB RAM & 1.33 AMD MaGe
Comment:

Hangs at 'Safe to ShutDown' screen.
(1) I tried rebooting in safemode/shutdown properly to reset the problem, never worked.
(2) I tried the W98 shutdown patch.
(3) I tried removing 'NAVEX & VWAVSYN' from the Shutdown/exclusion entry in the registry.(not sure what the 'DVP' entry was, any ideas?)
(4) I tried shuting down properly as soon as I got to Windows many time, that didn't help in my case.
(5) I tried cussing.
(6) I tried praying.
(7) I tried Large Hammer.
(8) Reinstalled W98se on top the old - I'm
trying to prevent loosing the current from a clean install.
*It only happens after I go in the game called 'Reel Deal Slots', so I guess it could be some type of TSR memory conflict caused by this one program - who knows, ya know, so many posiblitys & combinations.
Let me know if theres anything I might have missed, never give up. I for sure, do appreciate any help in advance and will send you billions of dollars for the anwser via your email. I'm usually the one that helps others with worse problems, but this is one I can't fix by myself... (I feel like a big dummy!) I allready know I can't fix my dummy part - any ideas on the Shutdown hanging problem with Win98se?

Before shutting down, try 'ending all the tasks' in the 'Close Program' window (ctrl-alt-del) except Explorer.

These are some notes I made for the various 98SE shutdown patches. You probably used the first one. You might try the ones for mapped or network drives. I don't have links to them, but a search on microsoft's site or google should turn them up.

4756US8.EXE IS THE REGULAR PATCH
260067USA8.EXE IS FOR MAPPED DRIVES
243199US8.EXE IS FOR NETWORK DRIVES
240075UP.EXE IS FOR USB1
231134UP.EXE IS FOR USB2

Mesich's Website has a lot of suggestions that you might try, including the Mapped Drives Shutdown Supplement, which (oddly) works for many people that don't have any mapped drives. I've used it myself on one PC.

On one setup, I ended up disabling hardware in Device Manager, one thing at a time. When I got to the keyboard, the shutdown problem ended. Strangest part of it was that the keyboard still worked, even though I had it disabled in Device Manager.

Assign an IRQ to the display adapter in the bios.

If this only happens after playing Real Deal Slots then you could run the 'Forced shutdown' from the command line after playing Real Deal Slots.

When ready to shutdown:
Go to Start, Run and type in
"C:\WINDOWS\RUNDLL32 SHELL32.DLL,SHExitWindowsEx 8"
(Without the quotation marks) and hit the Ok button.

Above is from http://aumha.org/win4/a/shutcut.htm.

The 8 at the end of the line causes

"POWEROFF: Exits Windows, then turns off the computer’s power (provided the computer supports the power-off feature)." (from the same web page)

You can create a desktop shortcut to do the same.

Entering the command in the Run box will keep it there for the next time you want to use it so you will not have to remember it or retype it.

"When you are ready to shutdown" meaning that you have closed all programs that you would before shutting down as when you have not played Real Deal Slots.

The command line is all one line.
If you copy and paste it into the Run box it will be correct.
C:\WINDOWS\RUNDLL32 SHELL32.DLL,SHExitWindowsEx 8

In the entire line there are only two spaces: one between RUNDLL32 and SHELL32.dll and before the number 8.
