To All Fellow Win98 Users in the year 2008,

For those of you that may have Microsoft’s Office XP, 2003 or 2007 at work and only to have Microsoft’s Office 2000 on your old Win98 computer at home since that is the last version of Microsoft’s Office that will run under Win98 and would like to have many of the same features that are in Office XP, 2003 or 2007, well there is finally an answer for all of us to have all those same futures on our old Win98 computers.

Much to my surprise when my XP computer was advising me that Java needed to be up-dated this month of July 2008, and I agreed, during the Java update I was asked if I wanted to download and install OpenOffice.org 2.4. And not knowing what it was, I installed it just to see what it was all about!!! Wow!!! It is a complete Office Suite that is equal to Microsoft’s Office suit that includes….

OpenOffice.org Writer = To Microsoft’s Word
OpenOffice.org Calc = To Microsoft’s Excel
OpenOffice.org Impress = To Microsoft’s Power Point
OpenOffice.org Base = To Microsoft’s Access

That is all a totally free software package from Sun Microsystems Inc., author of Java. This package can open and read all Microsoft’s Office Files, which you can then edit and save as Microsoft Office file and also includes….

OpenOffice.org Draw (a photo/image program) and OpenOffice.org Math, which I haven’t figured out what it is all about just yet!!

Now after up dating my XP computer with the latest of Java and this OpenOffice.org 2.4, I went to their web site and much to my surprise once again, OpenOffice.org 2.4, which is there latest version, well IT RUNS UNDER WIN98!!!!

So I turned to my old Win98 computer and downloaded it and it stalled it!!! Now rather than that old Office 2000 on my Win98, I’m running OpenOffice.org 2.4 with many of the features that are in Office XP, 2003 and 2007 on my old Win98!!!

So if this is something you would like to download, this Office Suite download link is….

http://download.openoffice.org/inde...

But if you are on dial-up, I would not recommend it, for the download package is something like 127MG bites. I mean it took me almost 1 hour with phone DSL service to download it, but it was so worth it for me to have a better Office Package than Office 2000 on my old Win98!!!

And one more bonus when you installing OpenOffice.org 2.4, It installs Java 6.4 which I did not even think would run under Win98!!! The last know version of Java I thought was 5.14. But don’t try to up-date it, for you will receive the same error message of Error 1723, as you do when trying to up-date 5.14!!!

Hoping this information is of some help to someone!!!

Cool, thank you!

I never knew MS Office 2000 was the last to run on Win98.

I have used OpenOffice a little bit in Linux and I do like it!

Thanks,

-Trent, a happy Windows 98 user.

Oh. OK, I might as well stick with my copy of MS Office 2000, though. There isn't too much difference between Office 2000 and Office 2002 (XP), except for an updated clip art selection.
